Before you travel

Everything on this list is easier to resolve while you are still at home and still able to change your mind. That is the whole reason it exists as a pre-travel list rather than a packing list.

In writing, before you pay a deposit

1. The full name of the surgeon who will operate.
2. The name and address of the facility where surgery will take place.
3. An itemised quote showing what is and is not included.
4. The written revision policy: who pays, for what, and for how long.
5. The written aftercare plan, including who you contact and how fast they respond.

Read and understood before you fly

1. The full consent form, in English, including the complications section.
2. What happens if you need a second night in hospital.
3. What happens if a complication means you cannot fly on the planned date.
4. Whether your travel insurance covers anything at all related to elective surgery. Most policies do not.
5. Whether your own doctor at home is willing to see you afterwards if needed.

Practical

1. Plan enough days for surgery, splint removal and a review before flying.
2. Someone to travel with you, or at minimum someone expecting to hear from you daily.
3. Where the nearest emergency department to your accommodation is.
4. A copy of your medical history and current medication, in English.
5. A written note of what was done, to take home for your own records.
